This course for dental hygienists in the state of Ohio will cover the basic concepts of the administration of local anesthesia. This self-study, lecture, hands-on course is designed to prepare the participant for the safe and effective administration of local anesthesia and pain control. Participants will complete 13 hours of on-line self-study prior to attending the 16 hour lecture and hands-on sessions. Participants will be taught in the Ohio State University College of Dentistry under the supervision of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery faculty and Dental Hygiene faculty.  All participants will give and receive injections and will be asked to complete a consent form and provide proof of current vaccinations prior to attending.

This lecture/hands-on course satisfies the 8 hour CE requirement of the Ohio State Dental Board (OSDB) for CDA's to perform this function.  Participants should bring a sample of the sealant material used in your office and bring as many extracted teeth as you can in a sterilized pouch.

This 4 credit hour lecture/discussion is designed to give the participant a better understanding of the causes and contributing factors of dental medical emergencies, while recognizing the signs and symptoms of possible emergencies that may occur in the dental office. The participant will be able to describe initial treatment indicated, incorporate the knowledge of prevention techniques, and state stress reduction protocols.

Pursuant to House Bill 463, this course satisfies the OSDB 4-hour CE requirement for dental hygienists, CDAs, and EFDAs to practice when the dentist is not physically present.  (Additional requirements include CPR certification and one year/1,500 hours of experience for DH, and two years/3,000 hours for CDA.) Panoramic radiographs provide an image of both jaws and the dentition in a single film. Accurate patient positioning is critical to ensure a diagnostic panoramic image. This course will address the proper steps to obtain a superb panoramic image. Attendees will gain knowledge with case-based interpretation of panoramic radiographs, and commonly seen errors. Attendees will also learn how to systematically read a panoramic radiograph to identify and diagnose any pathological lesions.

This presentation will focus on the standard of care in pediatric dentistry, while highlighting caries risk assessment, preventive, complex restorative care and behavioral management. Children of all ages and those with special health care needs will be included in the discussion with tips for modifying treatment. The impact on parenting styles and how that affects oral health and the relationship with the dentist will be explored.  In addition, common oral lesions that may indicate systemic disease will be illustrated with a discussion on diagnosis and management approaches. The program will emphasize the available evidence and guidelines for treating children in dentistry and what looks promising in the near future.
