This course is a prerequisite for the EFDA continuing education course at The Ohio State University.

This course provides an overview of the terminology and characteristics of all teeth in the adult and deciduous dentition. The course is open to all dental professionals, but it is a mandatory prerequisite for acceptance into the EFDA Continuing Education program offered through OSU. The course will include hands-on identification of all important tooth structures (pits, fissures, fossae, cusps, ridges, contours, preparation walls and angles, etc.).  Prior to June 18, participants will be emailed two documents that must be read/studied before attending the class session.

At the conclusion of the course, those certified dental assistants or registered dental hygienists who plan to apply for the EFDA curriculum will take a short written quiz on the course material and will be expected to complete an amalgam exercise. The results of the quiz and amalgam exercise will be used during the selection process for the EFDA course*.

This course meets the Ohio State Dental Board 6 hour CE requirement for Dental Hygienists to become eligible to administer nitrous oxide sedation, and for Dental Assistants to monitor nitrous oxide sedation. All participants are required to pass a written exam.

The use of hard tissue and soft tissue lasers in dental practice continues to evolve and improve. What began as a simple excisional device has transformed into a technology which can be used in every dental specialty. This informative and interactive experience will take you into the world of laser dentistry beyond gingivectomy and fibroma removal. Presentation topics will include techniques to enhance periodontal surgery, ailing and failing implants and predictable pain relief using various wavelengths.

Successful completion of this course will provide laser certification through the World Clinical Laser Institute.

Topics of exploration include: head and neck compartments and spaces, infratemporal fossa and TMJ, nasal cavities and sinuses, common anatomic variants, oral pathology presentations of common soft tissue masses, bone and radiographic anomalies.

This course for dental hygienists in the state of Ohio will cover the basic concepts of the administration of local anesthesia. This self-study, lecture, hands-on course is designed to prepare the participant for the safe and effective administration of local anesthesia and pain control. Participants will complete 13 hours of on-line self-study prior to attending the 16 hour lecture and hands-on sessions. Participants will be taught in the Ohio State University College of Dentistry under the supervision of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery faculty and Dental Hygiene faculty.  All participants will give and receive injections and will be asked to complete a consent form and provide proof of current vaccinations prior to attending.
