Faculty and Staff Featured in ADEA CCI Newsletter

The winter 2016 edition of the American Dental Education Association's  Commission on Change and Innovation (CCI) Liaison Ledger newsletter featured the efforts of Rachel Kearney, BSDH, MS, an Associate Professor in the Division of Dental Hygiene and Annette McMurry, JD, Director of the Office of Admissions. Working together, the two collaborated on a social media policy for the college that provides guidelines for the professional use of digital media by its dental hygiene and dental students.

Ms. Kearney, who serves as the dental hygiene Graduate Program Director, is also the author of a number of publications on the effective use of social media in academia. Ms. McMurry, an attorney by training and a longtime admissions director, identified the need to provide incoming students with guidance on the most effective use of social media venues.

"It [the policy] was really a group effort across the college," says Ms. McMurry. She and Ms. Kearney launched the first draft of the policy on their blog for college-wide review to encourage engagement. "Many respondents said it was good to draw attention to this issue, and our students were really interested," Ms. Kearney added. The social media policy was successfully implemented by the college in 2014.
