Prosthetically-driven implant dentistry is the optimal approach to treating patients with dental implants. Such an approach necessitates detailed pre-treatment planning to ensure an accurate three-dimensional (3-D) implant position is achieved within the alveolar bone relative to the planned prosthetic restoration. Static guidance systems communicate the predetermined virtual implant position to the surgical operating scene, using a rigid surgical implant template or guide. In the past 25-years, imaging and surgical techniques have developed both in accuracy and methodology. While these developments seem to be promising, a more comprehensive understanding is required for proper preparation and execution of computer assisted implant surgery.
