The College of Dentistry at The Ohio State University seeks applicants for the Assistant Dean of Admissions position at the rank of associate professor or professor on clinical or tenure track. A tenured appointment requires candidates to demonstrate a record of research, scholarly works, and teaching excellence.
As an R1 research-intensive university with seven health science colleges on its campus, Ohio State provides the optimum environment for the College of Dentistry to meet its tripartite mission of education, research, and service. The College of Dentistry is Ohio’s only state-supported dental school, and it educates more than 60% of the state’s dentists. The college’s Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) and Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene (BSDH) programs are integrated at both the clinical and didactic levels. Comprised of ten divisions, the college supports seven advanced education specialty programs accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation, in addition to residency training programs in general practice and dental anesthesiology. The college also benefits from its master of science in dental hygiene program and a National Institutes of Health T32 award that supports its PhD in oral biology program. The breadth and depth of these educational programs enable the college to attract highly-qualified pre-doctoral and dental hygiene students whose applications total more than 1,400 annually.
The primary responsibility of the Assistant Dean of Admissions is to provide leadership in the recruitment and admission of students for the college’s DDS and BSDH programs. This includes reviewing and developing admissions processes to recruit a well-qualified and diverse student body; managing the finances and personnel of the Office of Admissions; planning and overseeing events for the Office of Admissions; serving as chair of the DDS and BSDH admissions committees; serving on university and health science committees; serving as a liaison to the university’s Office of Graduate and Professional Admissions; strengthening faculty participation in student selection; establishing outcome evaluation processes for each program; preparing reports on the activities of the office for the college’s Institutional Effectiveness Committee, CODA site visits, and the American Dental Association’s annual surveys; partnering with the Office of Student Affairs in the transition of students in their respective programs; investigating and seeking resources to support special initiatives and research; assisting in college-wide strategic planning to reduce health disparities among Ohio’s underserved populations; providing direction and oversight of the DentPath post-baccalaureate program; and leading the College’s innovative Commitment to Access Resources and Education (CARE) program.
Candidates must have a DDS/DMD, DPH, EdD, or PhD degree. Preference will be given to those with experience and evidence of success in student recruiting for health professional colleges, especially in dentistry. For a tenure appointment, it is highly desired that candidates have a record of external funding in the areas of higher education/health science education, professional student admissions, and/or enhancing diversity in an academic community.
The successful candidate will possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills and a desire to create an environment that promotes collegiality and collaboration among members of various educational, research, service, and cultural communities. A willingness to serve as a role model and advocate for the ideals of professionalism and high ethical standards in a health science educational setting is essential.
