Recognized by the university’s Offices of Outreach and Engagement, Service-Learning, Student Life, and International Affairs, the project was honored for its demonstrated outstanding achievement in service-learning, with a long-term record of impact and achievement.

As described by Ola Ahlquist, PhD, Associate Vice Provost of the Office of Academic Enrichment, service learning is when instructors ensure knowledge is translated into action by providing students with an opportunity to apply what they’ve learned in a real-life setting where there is a true need in the community.

“The College of Dentistry has succeeded in building a robust, long-term outreach program that is a true benefit in our communities,” Dr. Ahlquist said. “The OHIO Project is a win-win-win situation. It’s a win for the students because they get an enhanced clinical education, exposing them to populations they might not necessarily find in other areas of their communication. It’s a win for the partner also. And the patients obviously win by having more access to care.”

College of Dentistry student Carrie Chen was recognized for her exceptional commitment to service with the Professional Student Award for Excellence in Community Service. “Community service is central to Carrie’s character,” Javaune Adams-Gaston, PhD, Senior Vice President for Student Life, said. “Her primary motivation to pursue a career in dentistry is to gain skills to help immigrant families. She has pursued this goal through a variety of service opportunities, most notably as co-director of Project Refugee Smiles,” a volunteer organization that provides dental care to refugees.
