The College Prepares for a New Era in Dental Simulation Training

The College of Dentistry is gearing up for another exciting construction project this spring: completing new, state-of-the-art simulation labs in the Postle Hall expansion.

This facility will serve as a dedicated space for the pre-clinical training of dental and dental hygiene students who currently train in the lab known for generations as “the PITS.”

The 16,000-square-foot simulation lab is designed to replicate the environment students will experience when they enter their clinical education phase. Students will practice with the same technology they’ll use in real clinics—bridging the gap between classroom and patient care.

PLANNED FEATURES INCLUDE:

125 full-size dental chairs, including five clinical operatories that support patient care and continuing education.

Studio-style teaching stations for detailed demonstrations of techniques and protocols.

Manikins with lifelike features.

Advanced technology, including electric handpieces, fiber-optic lighting, suction systems, and operator chairs identical to those in student clinics.

Computers at every station for live demos, dental literature and instructional videos.

Digital dentistry including intraoral 3D scanners and CAD/CAM software for designing crowns and bridges.

Integrated cameras for real-time feedback and faculty monitoring.

"This new simulation lab isn’t just a space—it’s a promise to our students: to prepare them for the future of dentistry.” - Dean Carroll Ann Trotman
