College Hosts Inaugural Diversity in Leadership Dinner

On April 19, Dean Carroll Ann Trotman hosted the college's inaugural Diversity in Leadership dinner at the Faculty Club. The event was designed to bring together leaders from every level in the college -- students, staff, faculty, administrators, and alumni -- so they could share their insights on ways to advance the college's myriad goals, including those related to enhancing diversity.

The event's keynote speaker was Akil Houston, PhD, an associate professor of Cultural and Media Studies in the Department of African American Studies at Ohio University. He spoke about integrity, leadership, and diversity that builds strength in organizations. Dr. Houston will join the college on June 1st as its Chief Diversity Officer and Assistant Dean of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

Others who spoke at the event were third-year dental student David Campbell who serves as president of Ohio State’s chapter of the Student National Dental Association, and Dr. Mehrdad Safavian, an alumnus of the college and a general dentist in Dublin, Ohio. Dr. Safavian also serves as President of the Columbus Dental Society, and he was instrumental in securing funding for the inaugural diversity dinner. The event was also attended by President Kristina M. Johnson, who joined the gathering in an impromptu visit.

In her closing remarks, Dean Trotman said, "I’ll leave you with this thought. As we work together to help shape the college's values and goals, including those that focus on diversity, we must be united in our efforts because we are stronger together. And by working together, we can accomplish great things!"
