College Joins "Remote Area Medical Volunteer Corps" to Provide Dental Care for Underserved Community
As part of the college's mission that includes serving the oral healthcare needs of Ohioans through outreach, a group of dental and dental hygiene students joined faculty volunteers to help provide free dental care for underserved members of the Columbus community. The event was hosted by the Remote Area Medical (RAM) Volunteer Corps, a non-profit organization that provides free dental, medical and vision care for those in need.
The event was held at Columbus's East High School on November 16 and 17, and it included volunteers from a number of organizations that offer medical, vision, and dental services. The college's faculty provided dental care and supervised dental and dental hygiene students as they helped serve those who came to the event seeking oral healthcare.
Dr. James Cottle and Dr. Leonardo Nassani, faculty in the Division of Restorative and Prosthetic Dentistry, and Elizabeth Chartier, a faculty member in the Division of Dental Hygiene, were co-chairs of the college's committee that organized the RAM event volunteers. Dr. Fonda Robinson, the Associate Dean for Clinic Administration and Patient Care, served as the college's clinical consultant.
Throughout the two-day event, the college's volunteers provided 212 extractions, 160 fillings, and 155 dental cleanings for participants in need of dental care.
