College Kicks-off “Building on Strong Foundations” Campaign
On the evening of September 8th, the College of Dentistry hosted a celebration that has been in the making for many years. Alumni and friends of the college joined the university’s senior leaders and state legislators in the courtyard at Postle Hall for the kickoff of the Building on Strong Foundations capital campaign that helps support the college’s plans for a new facility.
“This is our time! The support we are receiving for our new facility shows we are a priority for the university and the state. It also shows that others recognize our contribution as a statewide resource for oral health care, and that we are educating the dental professionals who will serve in Ohio, across the country, and around the world.” — Dean Patrick M. Lloyd
With a capital appropriation from the State of Ohio and a commitment of support from The Ohio State University, the campaign seeks to raise $25M for the project that will create a 130,000 square foot addition to Postle Hall, as well as the repurposing of more than 30,000 square feet in the existing structure. The new $95M building will house student pre-clinical labs and clinics, an ambulatory surgery center, a faculty practice, a radiology clinic, and a central sterilization facility. A two-story atrium with an attached café will offer a place for students and faculty to gather throughout the day. The repurposed space will provide upgraded student learning areas, high-tech classrooms, and easily accessible administrative offices.
In his welcome remarks, Dean Patrick Lloyd said, “This is our time! The support we are receiving for our new facility shows we are a priority for the university and the state. It also shows that others recognize our contribution as a statewide resource for oral health care, and that we are educating the dental professionals who will serve in Ohio, across the country, and around the world.”
Representing Ohio State’s senior leadership, Executive Vice President and Provost Bruce McPheron described the impact of the new building on the next generations of students, faculty, staff, and patients. “In keeping with President Drake’s vision and the university’s strategic plan, the Building on Strong Foundations campaign provides support for a new College of Dentistry facility that will enable, empower and inspire. The structure will enable the college to renew its commitment to teaching and learning, pioneering research, superior academic health care and operational excellence.”
Kevin Smith, a partner at Robert A.M. Stern Architects of New York, offered his comments as the design architect for the project. “This building is being thoughtfully planned to match the existing architecture along historic Neil Avenue. With the new Postle Hall’s prominent position at 12th and Neil, the facility’s classic design in brick and limestone will make it an ‘announcing building’ in the health sciences district.”
Following a video that included 3D and virtual renderings of the planned spaces for the new building, Dean Lloyd closed the event by thanking those who have given generously to the project. “Without the support of our loyal alumni and friends, this project would not be possible. The new Postle Hall will set a standard for other dental schools across the nation. It will incorporate the best of the best – the best facility for providing patient care; the best technologies available for educating students, and so much more. With this new facility, we will truly continue ‘building on our strong foundations’ of excellence, dedication, and success.”
