Hope Baxter (D4 student) and Emily Powell (D2 student) joined Dr. Rachel Kearney at the ADEA meeting to discuss the impact of social media in dentistry. Their talk, “Bridging Social Media Use in the Professional Environment,” shared how becoming a professional student impacts the utilization and sharing of content on social media.

The students highlighted ways dental students can use social media wisely. Their talk focused on being professional, protecting privacy, making good choices that align with school policies, and understanding how far-reaching social media can be.

“Presenting on my experience with social media at the ADEA conference pushed me outside my comfort zone in the best way. It challenged me to grow, build confidence, and connect with fellow dental professionals, all while highlighting the powerful role social media can play in shaping the future of dentistry,” Ms. Baxter said.

Ms. Baxter maintains a Tik Tok account covering fashion, beauty, and life topics, and has over 400k followers. Ms. Powell maintains an Instagram account that documents her life as a dental student. She also manages several social media pages for college student organizations.

Students can apply what they learned from the presentation to their studies and future careers.
