College Partners with ODA for "Give Kids a Smile" Kickoff Event!
On Saturday, February 8, the college will partner with the Ohio Dental Association (ODA) to kick off "Give Kids a Smile" (GKAS) events throughout the state.
The ODA hosts a kickoff event at a different site in Ohio each year to showcase the state's efforts to provide dental care for children in need. Statewide GKAS events in 2020 are expected to include 2,592 dentists and other volunteers; 164 events; and a total of $1.3 M in donated dental care that is provided for 47,614 children.
This year's kickoff event will be held in Postle Hall, where the college's dental hygiene and dental students, staff, faculty, and resident volunteers will work together to provide much-needed dental care, such as cleanings, fluoride treatments, fillings, extractions, and education about oral hygiene. The college has hosted two GKAS events annually since 2012, serving about 100 children at each.
"We are proud that the ODA chose our college as the kickoff site this year," said Dean Patrick Lloyd. "This event demonstrates our mutual commitment to providing Ohio's children with dental care - and genuine caring - as they come to us for their oral health care needs." He added, "GKAS events in our college are student-driven. Our DDS and dental hygiene students plan, manage, and raise funds for these events that give them leadership experience, while also preparing them to host their own GKAS events after they enter private practice. We'll have 107 DDS students and 21 dental hygiene student volunteers working with faculty and residents this Saturday to provide care for the 127 patients who are registered for our event. "
Special guests who will attend the kickoff include Sharon Parsons, DDS, President of the ODA; David Owsiany, JD, Executive Director of the ODA; Senator Stephanie Kunze, Ohio District 16; Senator Hearcel Craig, Ohio District 15; and Representative Allison Russo, Ohio District 24.
