The Ohio State College of Dentistry Enhances Patient Care with Epic “Wisdom” Transition

On Monday, June 17, the College of Dentistry successfully transitioned from its previous electronic health record system to the Epic “Wisdom” module within The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center’s (OSUMC) Integrated Healthcare Information System (IHIS). The new system is now live in the college’s student and resident dental clinics, Ohio State Upper Arlington Dentistry, and the Ohio State Dental Faculty Practice. This milestone marks the culmination of nearly three years of planning, preparation and collaboration with OSUWMC, our partner Columbia University College of Dental Medicine, and other contributors—including seven working groups, more than 80 project team members, and eight different consultants/vendor partners.

The IHIS system provides OSUWMC and College of Dentistry providers with access to shared patients’ health records leading to improved patient outcomes and enhanced oral health education experiences and interprofessional learning opportunities for students and faculty.

This medical-dental integration also brings several enhancements, including:

  • Streamlined treatment planning
  • Enhanced tooth charting
  • Real-time patient estimates and eligibility
  • Integrated appointment reminders
  • MyChart access for patients
  • Advanced scheduling capabilities
  • Integrated billing functions
  • Robust reporting tools
  • Access to patient records at other EPIC hospitals/clinics
