Kim Hammersmith, DDS, MPH, MS, is PI for $2.25M HRSA Grant

Dr. Kim Hammersmith is an Associate Professor-Clinical and Director of the Advanced Education Program in the Division of Pediatric Dentistry. She is the Principal Investigator for a five-year, $2.25 million grant titled “Increasing Pediatric Oral Health Access through Community-Based, Clinical and Leadership Training.” The grant is funded by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) that is part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. It will be co-directed by Dr. Hammersmith and Beau Meyer, DDS, MPH, an Associate Professor in the Division of Pediatric Dentistry.

The grant supports a postdoctoral training program that aims to improve access to and delivery of oral health care services in rural and urban disadvantaged communities. Using a multi-faceted approach – and working with Nationwide Children’s Hospital – the program will train 18-20 pediatric dental residents each year in a two-year combined certificate-Master of Science program. Specific goals include increasing the number of dentists who practice in rural or underserved urban areas; preparing dentists to address the oral health needs of disadvantaged patients with complex dental conditions; and increasing the number of dentists trained to manage, evaluate, and design oral health programs.

Other grant contributors include Division of Pediatric Dentistry faculty members Professor-Clinical Homa Amini, DDS, MS, MPH; Chair and Associate Professor-Clinical Daniel Claman, DDS; Adjunct Assistant Professor David Danesh, DMD, MPH, MS; and Adjunct Assistant Professor Kristina Petrich, DDS.
