Dr. Luiz Meirelles Named The Ohio State University Innovator of the Year and National Academy of Inventors Senior Member

Dr. Luiz Meirelles has earned two major honors:

• Ohio State named Dr. Meirelles as its Innovator of the Year. This award honors those who help move Ohio State inventions into public use.
• The National Academy of Inventors (NAI) named Dr. Meirelles to its 2026 Class of Senior Members. This honor goes to those whose patents help the public. This year’s class includes 230 inventors from around the world.

Dr. Meirelles is the inventor of multiple pioneering technologies, including advanced implant surface systems used in more than 300,000 patients globally and next-generation digital platforms that enable highly precise, non-invasive surgical monitoring.

Before joining the college in 2018, Dr. Meirelles served as Director of Product Evaluations at the American Dental Association Science Institute. There, he worked with partners across the country to guide research goals and standards. At Ohio State, he focuses on both teaching and research.

These honors set the stage for his continued research. Congratulations, Dr. Meirelles!
