Competency and Proficiency Statements

Upon completion of training, the student/resident shall be proficient in:

  • Providing appropriate pain control, including insensibility to pain, during surgical, therapeutic and diagnostic procedures
  • Providing relief from anxiety during surgical, therapeutic and diagnostic procedures
  • Monitoring and restoration of homeostasis during the perioperative period, including evaluation and maintenance of respiratory and circulatory status
    • Assessing the medical status of a patient through a comprehensive history and physical examination in preparation for anesthesia/sedation and determining the suitability for the proposed anesthetic care. Be able to communicate this information to the referring surgeon/dentist
    • Developing an anesthetic plan appropriate for the surgical procedure and medical status of the patient
    • Carrying out the anesthetic plan, including:
    • Clinical management and teaching of medical emergencies, including cardiac and pulmonary resuscitation

Upon completion of training, the student/resident shall be competent in:

  • The diagnosis and medical management of acute orofacial pain, including providing consultation to the operating surgeon/dentist regarding post-operative analgesic options
  • The understanding and interpretation of scientific research in order to critically evaluate the literature and apply it to improve patient care

Upon completion of training, the student/resident shall be familiar with:

  • The diagnosis and management of chronic orofacial pains
