The Sterilization Monitoring Service (SMS) offers protection — a chemical and biological monitoring package designed for veterinary practices — that provides testing, documentation, and peace of mind regarding your sterilizer.
About recommendations …
The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) and the Centers for Control Disease and Prevention, recommend both chemical and biological monitoring of sterilizers to prevent transmission of disease. Recommendations published in the AAHA INFECTION CONTROL, PREVENTION AND BIOSECURITY GUIDELINES (2018) include:
- The use of a chemical indicator (type 5 integrating indicator strip) in each pack of instruments is recommended for quality assurance that ALL critical sterilization parameters (steam, time, temperature) are met. - The periodic use of a biological indicator (spore test) to verify proper functioning of the sterilizer is recommended along with documentation of all test results. Spore testing is needed to determine if the sterilizer has reached the correct temperature, for the correct amount of time, and with the correct level of steam saturation. - For chemical monitoring
—one chemical indicator is placed in every cassette, packet or pouch that is sterilized. Depending on how often you run your sterilizer, you may need additional type 5 indicator strips. Additional strips can be ordered, as needed, at a discounted rate. - For biological monitoring
—once a month, a spore test is run in the sterilizer, then mailed to SMS and processed. Step-by-step instructions on how to complete spore testing is included in each kit. For steam sterilizers, test results and reports are available online within 24 hours of processing.
